I make a wide cap on the top of my walls, which I find necessary for strength and structure. The cap helps to frame in the wall or garden bed. This adds to the beauty and makes it so you can walk or sit along the entire length. I like to make the walls easy to access so they become less of a visual and physical barricade in the landscape. The wall can change as work progresses to accommodate the natural setting and needs of the property or garden space to what the homeowner desires.
The cap is usually made of large stones that are custom fitted to help them stay in place. I often use chisels and a grinder to achieve this fit. Of all the stones on the wall, the cap is perhaps the most important. It holds the wall in place and gives weight to the rocks below preventing them from moving or falling out.
